Historical Markers / Cornerstones, etc.History is all around us. Historical Markers. Cornerstones, Keystones, Plaques and other architectural features document history. They are on the sides of roads, on the foundations of schools and churches. Many older buildings had a name and date on the keystone at the very top. It is easy to miss these things as you go about your business in your daily life. Once you become aware of these traces of history you will develop a keen eye and a keen eye for history, of all kinds. Bottle CapsWhile cleaning, I found my bottle cap collection. There used to be a lot of different bottling houses and breweries in the Anthracite Region. On rummaging thru the caps, most of the companies have been long out of business - Ma's, Penn State Beverage, Star, and more. So much history in that little box. Danny Boehr Memorial Plaque On a recent trip to the Horseshoe Curve, there is a plaque on a bench to memorialize Danny Boehr. Danny was involved in the RAILROAD mailing list and was also known on the Internet as Al Tuner. MORE Taylor Coal, Restored Coal Lands A hunk of coal off of Oak Street in Taylor with some flowers around it is a nice reminder of the past. The former coal lands behind it have been cleared and graded. The flow of the creek changed and streambed upgrade for flood control. MORE Spike From Hanson's Park This little spike came from the amusement park train tracks at Hanson's in Harvey's Lake. My uncle pointed it out to me the last time we were there went it was operating as a park. MORE Tin Ceiling, Holy Trinity Gym, Swoyersville Visited Holy Trinity in Swoyersville for a recent bazaar. My nephew and I were in the Gym eating. I explained that was an old tin ceiling - all the bars, taverns and hotels had them and schools and some churches had them too. MORE Dump Car, Scranton This little dump car was parked in Scranton in the State Office Parking Lot. A neat little car. MORE Rhone, The Hanover Section of Nanticoke Sign Several new signs now mark the Hanover Section of Nanticoke, as Rhone. Rhone was the name of the area before it was a part of Nanticoke. MORE If You Are Hurt Sign From one of the Kiosks on the Wyoming Valley Levee Project in Kingston. This Kiosk shows a multi language sign needed to communicate to miners MORE Model Steam Engine, South Scranton Came across this model steam locomotive in South Scranton, near the D-L Breck Street Shops MORE Conrail Boxcar Pittston Junction Old rusty boxcar with Conral "Can Opener" Logo MORE Harry E Culm Dump A Culm Dump from the old Harry E Colliery still towers over Swoyersville, PA MORE Old Hillcrest Lampshade Factory The Old Hillcrest Lampshade Factory. My Grandmother worked here. It has been vacant for many years. MORE Old Rt. 307 Bridge (Was Luna Park Bridge Remains) Remains of the old Rt. 307 Bridge. MORE Mr.Dickover Looks For His Grandfather's Bricks Relative of Dickover Brick Co, sees page on Dickover Bricks, gathers namesake heirloom MORE Vulcan 1984 Here are some photos and descriptions of the Vulcan in 1984. This proves that it was in running order when it came to Wilkes-Barre. A L&WV NHRS handed this to me at the October Meeting. MORE Scranton Railway Carbarns Pictures from the mid-90's of the old Scranton Railway Carbarns on Providence Road in Scranton. Today, the buildings are gone, with retail development near the site. MORE Remains of Roller Coaster at Hanson's Just the one segment still remains. This was the entrance to the park and at one time the LV Bowmans Creek Branch ran thru it. MORE Hampton Yard Super's House This building may be the last remaining building from Hampton Yard. It was the Superintendent's house. MORE Death on the D&H, a short story of people picking coal on the D&H only to get killed by a train MORE PRR Shark B Unit that was formerly at the Sullivan Trail Breaker. MORE
