September 08, 2007 A fast moving fire on Friday, September 7th destroyed the former Silver Queen - bar, hotel, resturant in the East End Section of Wilkes-Barre. I awoke at 7:00 with a burning in my throat - it was the fire about 2 miles away. It had been burning since before 6:00 and was fully invloved by the time the FD got there. The building was operating as the Grapevine Grill since November and crowds were just starting to grow. I was planning to try it out. As the Silver Queen, it was owned by the same family for years. They had a real cheap menu. Like a hamburg for $2.00, a rib-eye steak sandwich for about $3.00. Dinners were like $6.95 - $9.00. A Scrod dinner was like $6.95. A Scrod dinner was like $6.95. The lady who owned it got too old and was unable to continue, so after a year of being vacant it was sold. I used to drive my parents there on Saturday nights when they would have a band. The would get a plate of cheese and pepperoni, drink pitchers of beer all night, and at the end, both would get a hamburg or a rib-eye steak and with the tip, the bill would be like $30.00. The pitchers were like $5.00. Also went to many after funeral dinners and other events there. Now it is all gone. No word if the Grape Vine Grill owners will rebuild. |
