Wilkes-Barre Lace Destroyed

October 21, 2007

The main building of Wilkes-Barre Lace AKA the Murray Building burns. The plume was seen 20 miles away. They eyesore was still burning at 5:00

One lady said that the homeless used to live on the 5th floor. Police grabbed 2 fleeing the building.

All of those big joists and floorboards were tinder dry. They were at one time varnished or painted. Since they made lace in there, chemicals must have soaked into the wood. Once it got going that was it.

Passerbys said it looked like they were getting it under control and then the floors collapsed and the fire flared up. The roof had that tar paper on that must have fueled it even more.

This was one of the largest fire in the city in years.
