OK. this is the story. Way back when Hudson Yard was working, a railroad worker told me the empty field next to Hudson yard had a coal breaker on it years and years ago.
He described that the area of what was the landfill, (now closed, behind the Mohegan Sun Casino) was the mine operation. The concrete piers and abutments in the creek carried the coal cars to the breaker.
He pointed out to me that the walls and concerte structures on the side of the road was from the mining operation.
Commerial buildings are on the site now, next to the tracks.
