July 18, 2005 One of my favorite Train Watching Spots from the 1970\'s was the Hollenback Pool in Wilkes-Barre. We used to go to the pool and off in the distance on the hill there would be a parade of D&H trains. In those days there was a siding that the D&H would store blocks of cars on. More cars from Hudson Yard would be joined on to the blocks of cars on this siding and some Monster trains would be formed. ![]() The pool closed on the early 80\'s. Supposedly there was a leak in the pool and the water was flowing down into the mines. Whatever the reason, the City of Wilkes-Barre chose to close the pool rather than fix it. There were 2 sliding boards and a diving board. The sliding boards were a lot of fun. ![]() The pool was filled in. Now it is an underground pool instead of an inground pool. The only thing left is the pool house. It has been boarded up for years. Across the street from the pool the remains of the Peach Orchard Colliery once stood and a massive smokestack of the power house. ![]()
