Ghost Horns

August 25, 2007

Last Sunday Morning I was out on the mountain bike. I was summoned to the former D&H tracks in Hudson by several whisltle posts. I seemed to have missed the train.

After about 15 mins I went thru Miners Mills and got on a trail that runs below the old D&H. I heard another horn blowing --.- for a grade crossing.

I waited and heard the units growling off in the distance. After about 20 mins nothing came so I left.

I could not figure out what I heard. Was it a train going up the mountain on the Lehgih Line. I am not sure if there is a crossing up there by Laurel Run.

I thought is was a train at Buttonwood. Or maybe a local. I left.

Returning to my house about 1/2 hour later, something did come thru Hudson, but I could not figure out what I heard before.

It is funny how sound can travel.

Then the other evening I was down by the Gauntlet. I was sitting in my car listening. The noise from the General Hospital kind of covers the sound from the one side. River Street also adds to the noise. The trucks screaming across the cross valley, and esp. thier Jake Brakes can sound a lot like a Whistle post.

Noise was coming from by General Hospital, like locomotives. I heard that little funny noise that I think the turbos make when the locomotives are going slow from the Kingston side of the river. I looked at the other end of the Bridge and saw the lights from the train.

The noise was transmitted across the river and for a time it actually sounded like a Southbound instead of a Northbound.

Just another reason why you have to be careful around tracks. You just might not hear that train.
